Kestrel Nest Box workshop

Join Friends of the Washington County Grasslands IBA on Saturday, September 26 for a fun hands-on workshop where you will build an American Kestrel nest box. New York State DEC wildlife biologist Marcelo delPuerto will brief you on a project to restore our smallest falcon species to a healthy breeding population  and provide instruction on building and monitoring the nest boxes. The boxes you build will (hopefully) become future homes for families of American Kestrels.

Friends of the IBA Field Trip

Join Friends of the IBA on a guided bird walk and brief auto tour in the heart of the Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area as we celebrate the return of our breeding grassland songbirds. Likely sightings include Bobolinks, Bluebirds, Eastern Meadowlarks, Mockingbirds, orioles, sparrows and many other songbirds, as well as native raptors like the American Kestrel (our smallest falcon), Northern Harrier (threatened) and Red-tailed Hawks. Savannah sparrow possible.

Guided Bird Walk

Join Friends of the Washington County Grasslands IBA on a guided bird walk to look for and hear colorful sweet singing warblers, thrushes, tanagers, orioles and dozens of other migratory songbird species at the Christ the King Spiritual Life Center.  We’ll explore a couple miles of trails that meander through the open fields and wooded hills of this 600 acre private retreat located in southern Washington County. 

New England Coastal Birding Adventure

Join Friends of the IBA as we travel to some of the top birding spots along the New England Coast to see hundreds of native birds at some of the Northeast's most pristine and spectacular coastal habitats. Last year's species total was 93, yet our pace was leisurely. We're hoping to break 100 for this trip!
 

Owl Watch & Winter Bird Walk

Has been rescheduled from February 14th to March 7th. Join Friends of the IBA on a winter birding adventure as we look for wintering raptors and songbirds in the Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area (IBA). Sightings last year included Red-tailed and Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers and Snowy Owls  Horned larks and Snow Buntings were common, especially after a fresh snow.

Join Friends of the IBA for an introduction to state endangered Short-eared Owls and other at risk birds of the Washington County Grasslands Important Bird Area.  Learn about these amazing owls and other at risk grassland birds and this dedicated nonprofit group’s work to conserve the birds and their habitat.  You will meet and learn about Short-eared Owls, Snowy Owls and some of the other Live Birds of Prey that will flock to Friends of the IBA’s 5th annual Winter Raptor Fest in March!
